How do two guys in a garage beat the big guys in the sheave business?
In the beginning, it was just me, Stew Walton.
When I took over tiny Sheaves, Inc. in late 2002 the biggest part of my career had been spent making machines that make things. I have designed machines that toast Kellogg's Corn Flakes, roast the peanuts in Mars candy bars, insulate house wiring and high voltage cables, make tea bag paper, corrugated cardboard, plywood, plastic pipes, and scores of other products.

The Sheave Guys - Dick Cazeault and Stew Walton
This experience included two decades of experience in wire & cable factories, in designing and building machinery for the manufacture of wire & cable, and in the design and application of sheaves for wire, cable and wire rope.
Lifting sheaves was a logical extension.
The lifting sheave market is huge, dominated by multi-million dollar companies that had been in the business for 50 years or more. How was I going to compete with such giants?
By listening to customers.
I wanted to give customers whatever they wanted - quickly, and without a lot of corporate bureaucracy getting in the way. Just good solid engineering delivered in a fraction of the normal time.
I created a global network of reputable vendors giving us the capability to supply sheaves from 1 inch / 25 mm to 72 inch / 1.8 meter in diameter in virtually any material required. I sought and found people with the skills and passion to do the job right. This network continues to grow and get stronger. Most of our suppliers are entrepreneurial firms run by the founding owner. Our relationship is owner to owner.
It was a winning approach and the business grew rapidly.
That's when I hired Dick Cazeault. We've been friends for 20 years and I know he possesses solid engineering credentials, good business judgment and a great personality. When I needed help, he was my first choice.
We're two guys with a passion for solid engineering and problem solving.
We offer more variety than any one of the big giants -
but without all the lumbering bureaucracy -
a sheave company uniquely responsive to your requirements.
We each do design, sales, sourcing and purchasing - coordinating each project from initial inquiry to final delivery.
No frustrations waiting for someone upstairs to approve a decision,
no waiting for another department to weigh in, no delays waiting for a committee decision.
Where this garage and what is it like?
Our third location in six years has landed us next to the Groton - New London airport, between the historical Mystic Seaport Museum five miles east and the General Dynamics nuclear submarine builders 3 miles west. Tradition and technology surround us.

The General Dynamics Electric Boat Division, worlds
foremost builder of nuclear submarines lies just west of us.
We bought a new but empty 1600 square foot shell.
We have added a 400 square foot mezzanine office and a minimal machine shop and small parts storage below.
The machine shop is used for last minute modifications.
The remaining 1200 foot is reserved for storing pre-machined sheave blanks and assembly of the Quick-Ship sheaves.
We have fork lift loading and unloading of trucks, daily UPS pick-up, as well as FedEx and DHL when required.
Space to Grow
Some examples of beating the big guys?
When lives are at risk, major buyers have relied on us.
The US Navy needed sheaves for the loading and unloading cranes of the ammunition ship USNS Flint. Absolute reliability was required. We met the requirement with rigorous quality control from raw material certifications through load testing of the finished sheaves.
Cirque Du Soleil needed sheaves to support and tension the trapeze high wire for their new facility in Tokyo. This time absolute reliability was paired with a tight lead-time. We were able to meet both demands.
Since the beginning of 2003, we have supplied 30,000 sheaves in a range of sizes and materials to customers all over the globe.
What became the biggest criteria?
Speed. We immediately saw that across the board, people needed quotes, technical answers, solutions and deliveries in a hurry. The cost of downtime and delays far exceed the cost of a sheave.
Companies buy sheaves to do a job and time spent waiting for sheaves is time and money lost.
While we continually searched for suppliers that could help us shorten lead-times, jobs still take longer than customers want. This problem was constantly in our thoughts but the thousands of combination of basic variables seemed insurmountable.
But then the answer came and we finally saw a solution.
This took a totally new concept in sheave design and construction. We divorced the OD / rope size variables from the shaft size / bearing type variables. Now a small number of pre-made components can be assembled into a huge number of custom sheaves.
Q Sheaves in 350 varieties are now available in 24 hours or less. Diameters 6" to 16" with a variety of rope sizes, pin sizes and bearing types can be quickly speciified and shipped to fit your needs.
We don't spend all our time in the garage
Rotary International
Over the years I has been active in several trade associations and non-profits, but the best experiences have definitely associated with Rotary International.
Rotary combines the camaraderie of a weekly lunch meeting of friends with local, regional and international service.
My last position was chair of the international committee. Before I left that post, we wrapped up a project in Tanzania that built a windmill driven well to provide drinking and irrigation water for 5000 families.

In native language, it means "You fish on your side, I'll fish on my side, and nobody fish in the middle." Today itâ€s called Webster Lake, the largest lake in New England that is entirely in one town.
In 2002, Dick and some neighbors on the lake created the Webster Lake Association to lead environmental efforts to preserve the lake they all enjoyed so much. Dick was elected the first President and has served in that capacity ever since. The organization is still growing in size,

Mass. Lt. Governor Tim Murray, and Governor Deval Patrick visited WLA
to thank them for their initiative and success in cleaning up Webster Lake
